N2 - Simplified front of package labelling (FOPL) of the nutritional value on packaged foods aims to assist consumers in selecting healthier food options. This approach can improve dietary habits and help prevent diet-related chronic diseases, such as obesity. An increasing number of countries as well as some food manufacturers and retailers are already implementing various FOPL models; however, there is substantial resistance to the mandatory introduction of a unified system, particularly from the food and agricultural industries. In contrast, consumer organizations and health experts have long advocated the EU-wide implementation of a standardized, color-coded and interpretive FOPL to enhance transparency and facilitate the selection of healthier food. This article describes the existing FOPL models and the current situation in Europe and Austria. It highlights the potential benefits of a unified system, discusses the challenges associated with the implementation of FOPL and explores its potential impact on public health.
